I'm not sure why people are so worried about the new age discrimination act that makes it illegal to unnecessarily demand you have certain qualification (when you don't need one to do the job) or to have 5 or more years of experience in doing something (when clearly you didn't need that to know you have all the necessary skills, competence, and ( Read more... )

A degree gets you your first job. After that your experience gets you hired, as shown on your CV - or even better, personal recommendations from people you've worked with.

At my last job (web developer working on some fairly large projets) I was the first person they'd ever hired with a degree... they just didn't consider a degree to prove much about what you could actually do.

The degree certainly doesn't always demonstrate that you have qualities that people without that degree wouldn't have, but someone with a masters or above in a specialised subject will find it useful if they plan to be a professional researcher or policy maker in that particular field.

My degree didn't get me my first job, I was lucky to have people who really knew the basic qualities you needed to do the job and who could see those were my strong points give me a job I didn't ask for. And yes, people also can't get too complacent about their experience anymore if the quality of it is poor, cos I've certainly seen people with the experience on paper who still don't know what the fuck they're doing - and this act helps to weed those c*nts out.
