2009: The year of transition

Jun 29, 2009 13:09

This year I have observed a number of my friends and acquaintance going through periods of transition (changing jobs, changing living location, struck down by illness, etc) and I am no exception ( Read more... )

Been meaning to catch up with you for ages, although these last few weeks have been hectic.

I read somewhere you are off to Sydney in a few weeks? How long are you there for?

Yes, we will catch up when I return. And we can even do it during the day, unless I disturb your studying habits :-)

I'll only be in Sydney while you're at IV. It means I'll miss Ayla too. :(

I will be in Melbs on the 20th and 21st though so maybe we could meet up there (and go shopping?)

I'm catching up with kremmen on 21st but can definitely meet up on 20/07. I fly in arriving at 14:45, so perhaps we should go seek out the culinary delights of Melbourne on that Monday evening. Whereabouts will you be staying?

Looks like an excellent trip. I've been to Darwin and Alice, but nothing special to suggest. Darwin is a country town pretending to be a city. (... moreso than Perth!) Interesting shops; strange people. I really enjoyed it.

The last time long-distance rail trip I took here was ages ago on the ICD, but would like to try it again sometime, so looking forward to hearing how they are these days.

I'm in the cheap seats for all my train travel. I bought the following pass, which makes it great value to travel around if you have the time to do so.

$690 for all my train travel. Limited to the Great Southern Railway network, but I've made do :-)

The recliner seats thus far have been fine - better than airplane seats, but you would hope so since you do spend more time in them.

There are sleeper cabins of various classes available but they cost a huge bundle more. I may indulge and upgrade to a Red sleeper cabin for one of my legs - just to see what it is like.

So the other leg and the rest of your body stays in the seats - gee, that one leg is special :)

See you at IV!

So _that's_ the trick to affordable train fares! I'm highly tempted. Either way, there's a chance I can co-incide with you in SA, we shall see!

Apparently the botanic gardens in Alice are good for Western Bowerbird. ;)

Yes, I have seen bowerbirds there many times, you can get very close, and there is also a very nice café there.

My brother is a birder, and stayed in Alice with us, so I can probably actually tell you quite a bit about the birds there. A tip to get birding advice is to visit the Desert Park, go see the raptor show (which is pretty interesting), and then ask the bird keepers about birding generally, as they are very knowledgeable about local birds.

If one was to be inclined to follow astrology between ones 27-30th yeah there is the Saturn Return which (in theory) is a time of great change and reassessment.

I'll be eastside when you are, but the dates don't match up.

Even if you don't hire a car, there are plenty of commercially run day trips to the Western Macs, and to Hermannsburg (where Albert Namatjira came from) and Palm Valley (ancient palm trees, great country).
It looks like you'll arrive late Sunday morning, so if you're keen you can catch the tail end of the markets in Todd St Mall.
