What are the I CLAVDIVS discs like? I read a review somewhere that praised the series but excoriated the actual way the DVDs had been produced. (I'll have to have a look for myself before I lash out on them.)

The way that they've made the dvd's is that instead of having 1 hour long episodes as screened on the TV, they've produced it into 4 movie length parts (about 3hrs long each, I think). So, it's not broken up into easily watched episodes, but you can always pause and start again later - that's the beauty of dvd's.
As for the series, it is fantastic and you all should watch it! Karl says that most of it is infact true... those scheming two-timing Romans!
I hate it when they do "movie length" versions of things! (I absolutely refused to buy any of the Doctor Who video releases which were stitched together thusly, as it spoils the cliffhanger endings which are integral to the pace and flow of the show.)
And I also happen to like the serpentine theme music, so having the beginnings and ends chopped off would really piss me off :(
I've recently been watching Season 1 & 2 of bab 5, Seasons 1,2,3 & (part of) 5 of The West Wing, the Jack Ryan collection of movies, and large amounts of other crud.
The Bab 5 alone is 44 episodes. Now I wanna see our last best hope for victory.
