Grr!
I am serious fed up with Livejournal's inability to run a mostly functioning site. I did not extend my paid account, out of many general annoyances, and the site has only got worse, since. I used to use LJ for a feed aggregator, but these days it won't update. that means I don't get my new comics (my daily funnies) , science blogs, or anything not ( Read more... ) -

My finances are slowly recovering after having been decimated - not in the literal sense of the word, since it was much greater than 10%. But I was talking about something - I forget what - when a UK acquaintance mentioned having gone to Iceland. Jorge Cham visits UAF
Although it wasn't my intention, I ended up having a very interesting night last night. I stayed in town to listen to Jorge Cham talk - he's the guy who draws PhD comics, which are funny and eerily accurate. In another "Scientists aren't nearly protected enough" story, a researcher died of plague. This sort of story gives me the heebies whenever I work with competent strains. I know a guy who got typhoid fever from working with a supposedly competent strain.
And now I resume packing. I have too much junk!

Yale Murders
They say they've arrested a lab tech at Yale for Annie Le's death, on the basis of DNA evidence. That's fine - DNA evidence is dang good, unlike the rest of the forensic voodoo they dress up in sciencey words. But they're saying the murder happened because... the student didn't follow her colony protocol? WTF.

For those of you following at home, I've finished the boat. It's very lovely, and floats great. I took it out last week to test it in a shallow pond, and this morning I did a paddle up and down a portion of the Chena River.
