Personal Electronics Naming Conventions

One of the things that ubiquitous networking technology has brought us is the need to name our electronic devices. For many people, this is a burden best resolved with a serial number or inventory tag. And for some, it is merely a place to yet again place their own name or initials on a device. For a few, however, it is an opportunity to let ( Read more... )

Everything on the network at Casa Zendrake has a name that begins with a Z. The more computers we get, the more of a challenge it is to come up with a Z name without repeating any of the old ones, and we've had so many I can't even remember everything we've used. Um... The new desktop is Zeus, the one in the back room is Zion, my laptop is Zakuro, my old desktop in high school was Zathras at one point but was rechristened Zenith when I wiped and reloaded it, as my bedroom was in the attic...we've had Zippy, Zoltan, Zooty...there's more, maybe Mom will remember.

Now that I've moved out, it's almost odd to have things on the network that don't alliterate. I'm going to have to go up to Oni and go "Pick a letter!"

Deja vu all over again... ;)

Last PC: Shion. Didn't do jack you told it to do, frequently decided to ignore you, and you wanted to reach into it and give the CPU a solid backhand. So just like her namesake in Xenosaga.

Current PC: Belle. Quiet, competent, and faithful. Has met every challenge her was with distinction. Named after a character created by my GM, Flare. I love it to pieces.

iPod: Ciaphas. Named after a Commissar in the Warhammer 40k universe. Has the devil's own luck, just like its namesake.

Phone: Uther (the Lightbringer). Solid, unassuming, and has a helluva bright display.

I haven't thought of a good name for a DS yet.

I don't remember the details of my electronics, but they're all named after Japanese ghosts and such. My first computer was Sadako, my scanner was Kayako, my DS was Toshio and my laptop is Onryou.

When I had three hard drives, they were named Atropos, Clotho, and Lachesis. Now that I share my external hard drive with everyone on the network, it's been renamed Vietnam.

Goodness, I cannot recall a time I've named an electronic. I know that my new laptop is named Aglaea. Daniel named her. I know he names his electronics. He'll probably be the one naming all of our things, except children. I claim stake in that.
