The question, however, for which action was she apologizing? Was it for the dancing with Alford or the invitation to lunch? Safer ground to address the latter.
"He will most likely find an excuse to not join us for lunch." Gwendal gives a sardonic grin. "I seem to scare him."
He comes to an abrupt halt, causing Anissina to jostle against him in the change of momentum. "I left your fan near the benches where Gisela was sitting."

She looked down, blinking away a couple of tears. And because of this, she almost tripped over Gwendal when he stopped.
"It's okay, Gwendal. One of the maids or the soldiers will bring it to my rooms in the morning. There's no need to worry about it. It was only a cheap one from the town anyway. I only got it because it went with my dress." She smiled up at him for being so thoughtful.

"Do not worry, nothing will get in the way." He paused, the image of Alford's attempted kiss of Anissina running through his mind. "But you know that I do not share, regardless of how traumatic one's upbringing might have been, it is no excuse to kiss the woman I love."
'Shit. Did I just say that aloud?'
"Care for most," he amended, praying she didn't catch his slip.

"Woman you love?!" Anissina breathed the words. "You love me?"
She didn't know what to say. She didn't even notice his coverup. She was blinking hard.
"I think I need to sit down. Yes. Sitting down is good."
And that was what she did. She sat down. On the floor. In the middle of the corridor. And concentrated on keeping breathing.
