Week 2 - I Don't Care About Apathy: What I Should Care About But Don't

Oct 02, 2008 10:52

I have never practiced organized religion in my life. Although several times within the last year, I've thought to myself, "Maybe it's time I start," I never have. Even though I needed to go to the Methodist Church in Old Town as part of my volunteer work, I didn't. Even when my school and personal lives fell into a downward spiral last spring, I ( Read more... )

I don't know if things would be better if you joined an organized religion. Maybe the only thing would be structure. That is the only reason I can think of and it certainly isn't enough for me to join.

A couple of churches run TV spots claiming that certain things are 'the foundation for a better life'. However, none of the things they name have ties to any particular religion, which makes me think, "If I can improve my life without religion, what's the point of practicing?"

I agree. I don't know what benefit organized religion has. I see most as corrupt.

It seems like you're right about most religions being corrupt. All of a sudden I'm having flashbacks to the Simpsons episode "She of Little Faith."

I tried organized religion ... it didn't work for me but that was mostly because of hypocrisy. I'm happier being a heathen. ;)

Forcing yourself to believe in something is probably not a good idea.

Interesting! I'm just the opposite. I don't believe, but I sometimes profoundly miss the church community.

I hope you don't mind me asking, but did you practice a religion in the past? Since you mentioned missing the church community, it sounds like you did. If I made friends through church, I would certainly miss them if I was to stop going.

I grew up in the church. I still have a few friends from childhood, but I've moved several times and I no longer have that sense of community.

Moving certainly destroys sense of community, as I've learned multiple times.

I'm not sure organized religion is the solution for anything, really. On the contrary, I often think.

I've never heard of any trouble being caused by anyone taking up a new religion, but I agree that it probably wouldn't solve anything.

Well depends on what they are getting into. A lot of people become zealots, as if to prove that even though they didn't adopt the religion from the start they are just as good believers as "native" believers. And sects, those are bad too lol.
