I disagree with a good portion of that article, possibly from my background in family science. How, for instance, is a child supposed to learn to assert his or her self without a strong personal identity (or the ability to nurture one). The article cites 1950s ideals and norms as the "standard" of which we should strive for. Sure, a great many of Americans are ego-centric, but it's not necessarily because they were told they should try and develop a good self-esteem about themselves. Using the examples about children being told that they can be anything they want is describing individuals who have distorted that idea - being anything they want without having to work for it. Also, the desire for professional jobs and careers has risen along with inflation and the cost of living. No longer can someone work in an "unskilled" job, call it their career, and live above the poverty line, especially with children
