Genevieve in A/B/O: A List of Fanworks

Feb 22, 2013 19:55

I haven't written a primer on a/b/o, simply because other people have already done it much better than I ever could.

What I will say is why I like it. And it basically comes down to "fun with worldbuilding" + "gender anarchy."

Women in A/B/O: A Brief Explanation
In a/b/o, you get to map all kinds of gender assumptions and roles onto people who wouldn't necessarily deal with them in our world. Guys get birth canals (in their rectums, even), along with other traits Western society likes to foist on women, like a life-purpose centered around making babies/pleasing their man, er, alpha, and sexual submissiveness. Some of the most horrible and destructive cultural narratives about women become literally true. In a/b/o, 'women' can make 'men' rape them; they really do need to be contained for their own protection, etc. 'Men' are similarly hyper-sexed: quite a few fics paint them as muscular, animalistic, aggressive and very, um, virile. Also, there are dog dicks.

This leads to an incredibly wide sort of canvas, where writers can explore the darkest implications of these sorts of narratives and/or uphold them, for the sake of kink or otherwise, or write complex worlds where people don't slot neatly into the roles society tells them they ought. Which brings me to women in a/b/o.

The vast majority of a/b/o stories are m/m slash, and I'm not dissing those; it can be really interesting to see traditional heterosexual gender roles mapped onto m/m couples as blatantly as the a/b/o trope demands. But adding women-alpha, beta, omega or otherwise-can bring a really fascinating element to the table. How do alpha women stack up against alpha men? How does society view omega men, who embody many of our ideas about women, compared to beta or 'normal' women? What about omega women? There's a lot of juicy stuff to be explored, is what I'm saying.

This is not a comprehensive look at women in a/b/o, but I did try to include every fanwork featuring Genevieve. If I missed any, let me know in the comments! I would've included Ruby, but I couldn't find any Ruby-centric a/b/o.

Genevieve in A/B/O: A List
I didn't include a/b/o fics where Gen is a main character but plays the villain, because they are not relevant to my interests.

I'd rec any of the stories on this list.

A Fine Job of Bending All the Rules (verse) by longsufferingly
Pairing: alpha!Adrianne/omega!Genevieve
A completed series with three parts.
Author's Summary: In theory, one-in-twenty girls are alphas. But Gen's never met one before.
Note: I believe this was the story that made me fall in love both with fanon!Genevieve and a/b/o as a trope. I highly, highly recommend it to anyone who's somehow managed to skip it.

Hot Shoot by janice_lester
Pairing: omega!Jared/alpha!Gen
R. 4,800 words.
Author's Summary: The photographer being hot, and Alpha, doesn't help Jared's nerves.
Note: This fic gets extra points for an enjoyable BFF!Jensen.

In Charge by janice_lester
Pairing: beta!Jared/alpha!Gen
NC-17; 4,400 words.
Author's summary: Gen isn't supposed to want a guy like Jared, but that isn't going to stop her.
Note:  I have a special fondness for 'verses in which lady!alphas get to have interesting parts, too, and janice_lester likes to deliver. This one is sort of especially interesting, as alpha!Genevieve prefers the fantasy of being an omega, and beta!Jared enjoys helping her out.

I Thought You'd Be Taller (verse) by snickfic
Pairing: Gen (not as in Genevieve), leading toward eventual alpha!Gen/omega!Jared
PG-13 to R
Author's summary: Danneel is so done with being the traumatized survivor. She's ready to take classes and make friends and be, you know, normal.
Note: This series, along with longsufferingly's, really made me fall for Genevieve as a character. She's lovely here - brash and a bit prone to glossing over her insecurities in telling ways, and you really feel for her as she tries to fit in with the other women. Plus, much of the series is devoted to female friendship, and there's not nearly enough of that in this fandom.

Missing Piece of the Puzzle by stripysockette
Pairing: Jared/Gen/omega!Jensen
NC-17; WIP
(Except from long) Prompt: Jared and his wife Genevieve buy their first Omega, Jensen, to bear their first baby for them. At first they're both perfectly OK with using their Omega and then carting his carcass off to the incinerator. But then Jared starts to develop feelings for Jensen and decides that he'll do whatever it takes to make sure that his gorgeous, sweet, wonderful Omega survives the delivery.
Note: This one's sure interesting! Omegas are engineered to die in childbirth, but Jared and Gen develop feelings for Jensen, the omega they bought to have their child, and want to save him.

Pillows by scarletscarlet
Pairing: alpha!Gen/omega!Jared
G; art
Artist's description: For the a_b_o_ladies challenge. Preggers omega!Jared is snoozing with ALL the pillows, but alpha!Gen doesn't mind, because she's got a better spot to rest her head for a bit.
Note: This is lovely. I adore Gen's expression.

Signals by janice_lester
Pairing: alpha!Gen/omega!Jared
NC-17; 1,000 words.
Author's summary: Jared and Gen have devised ways of signalling what they want from each other. Jared definitely has a favourite.
Note: A/b/o does not have enough het pegging.

The Spice 'Verse by ghostyouknow27
Pairing: omega!Misha/omega!Gen
Author's Summary: A het omega/omega high school AU 'verse, in which Gen and Misha are BFFs.
Note: Yup, this is me, but I'm trying to be comprehensive, here. There are three stories in this 'verse so far.

Take by snickfic
Pairing: Gen/Adrianne
NC-17
Prompt: Pretty much what it says on the tin. Adrianne might be an alpha, and that might mean she's tall, and has certain biological impulses, but all that societal stuff about alphas being in charge all the time? It's really not for her. Gen's the one Adrianne's been seeing for a little while now, and Adrianne thinks she might trust Gen enough to bring up that she doesn't want to be the head of everything. Your call on whether Gen is a toppy little omega who thinks it's perfect, a not-particularly-dominant type herself who works out a compromise, or something else, whatever you like.
Note: Gen's a little unsure about Adrianne's fantasy but wants to make her partner happy, and it's adorable.

Untitled by longsufferingly
Pairing: omega!Gen/omega!Danneel
A comment fic, for which the author didn't provide a rating or word count. I would say it's PG.
Excerpt: Gen has never had an omega hit on her before, but Danneel Harris doesn't really seem like a typical omega.
Note: My only issue is that it's not longer.

Untitled by longsufferingly
Pairing: alpha!Jared/omega!Gen
A comment fic, for which the author didn't provide a rating or word count. I would say it's NC-17.
Excerpt: Jared doesn't bother even looking up when he feels a omega-in-heat entering his area. It's the kind of thing he's mostly gotten used to over the years--omegas go into heat, he'll be able to tell, but there's no real point in bringing it up.
Note: There isn't a whole lot of fic pairing a female omega with a male alpha, which makes this kinda unusual and interesting. Also, it's longsufferingly, so you know it's wonderful.

Unusual by janice_lester
Pairing: alpha!Misha/alpha!Gen
A comment fic, for which the author didn't provide a rating or word count. I would say it's PG-13.
Prompt: Any Misha/Gen story in which they're both alphas.
Note: This is really sweet! I loved Gen coming into her alpha-ness and how Misha mentors her through it (and how his feelings for her don't change one whiff).

What Should Really, Really Never Be by snickfic
Pairings: Ruby/Sam, alpha!Gen/omega!Jared, alpha!Gen/Sam, omega!Misha/beta!Jensen, omega!Misha/Dean
Rating: PG-13; 9,768 words
Author's summary: In which Supernatural is a TV show, the gal who plays Ruby has apparently knocked up the guy who plays Sam, and the guy who plays Cas keeps bugging Dean for PDAs. Dean’s just relieved that the guy who plays him is a beta, whatever that means.
Note: This fic is unbelievably fun: Imagine if, during the French Mistake, Sam and Dean didn't just go to a world where they're actors playing Sam and Dean, but where a/b/o dynamics are the lay of the land. I loved Dean's interactions with a rather hurt Misha, but it has to be said that alpha!Genevieve does a through job of stealing the show.
