A thought experiment: Imagine it is Yom Kippur, and you have not eaten or drunk all day. Further imagine that, aside from 40 assignments in urgent need of correction (and I do mean urgent) you also have obligations to type up the results of your research, conduct new research, and write an assignment of your own. Imagine that all but one of these is due tomorrow morning at 10:30. Imagine how tired and exhausted you must feel as you settle down to work. Imagine that, as Yom Kippur only ends after sundown, if you are to avail yourself of various stimulants by oral ingestion you must wait until late to do so. Imagine how the oral ingestion of stimulants might interact with say, insomnia. Then imagine what it feels like to have a stomach full of coffee on no sleep.
Sounds like you had a rough day. I think each of those things would be unpleasant alone, and awful in combination. Do you have a lot of marking to do this semester?
It is 3 a.m. With the exception of a half-hour doze face down on a Mackinnon desk, I have not slept since 10 yesterday morning. I had three classes today, a meeting with my supervisor, and I had to mark assignments. So, yes. Quite.
The class I mark has 41 students, and I think there are supposed to be roughly 4 assignments, which I imagine will be 3-5 questions. The marking is actually not awful though; it went far more quickly and smoothly than I expected, even at 6 a.m. on no sleep. I marked George's assignment! I tried to take off marks but was overruled by the prof. Boo!

Do you see what I'm trying to say here?
