Let us eff the ineffable

I am aware that some of you are. . . resistant to the idea that Moby Dick is the greatest book of all time not written by James Joyce. I realize I can't convince you, but maybe Orson Welles can?

I think what I actually said about Moby Dick was that I could imagine myself liking it IF I were an old man reading at the leisurely pace of about one paragraph a day. I don't deny that the language is really very lovely but the book just draaaaaaaaaaaags on and when you are trying to get through it for a class you really hate and you are a ridiculously slow reader for an English student it is not good times.

I do find myself wishing I had had this as an audio book read by Orson Welles when I was trying to read it.

My favourite part of the book is still, "The waves were storied with his deeds." That sentence didn't quite make up for the gigantic descriptions of deblubbering a whale though.

Fair enough. I probably would not have enjoyed reading it for class either. And I guess I try harder than you to feel like an old man at all times.

But yeah, Orson Welles: superpimp.

I have still only read one of those books, which I think is too small a sample size to judge. I guess I've only read two Joyce books, but at least they were like, a billion pages long. When I read Orlando (which I will do someday, I swear) then I will be able to sing VW's praises properly.
