Made in GIMP 2.
Fairly simple and translatable.
Do NOT hotlink any of the images!

TUTORIAL TRANSLATED TO GIMP FROM THIS AMAZING TECHNIQUE AT ICONOPHILIA!

1) Open the image and crop it to the side.
Now go to Layers > Colors > Desaturate, to make the image black and white.
Duplicate this layer and set it to soft light.
You can mess with the opacity, but it's usually fine at 100%.
Merge the layers to one base.

2) Set the base to soft light. Now it's invisible!

3) Open this texture by ??? and stick it BELOW the base.
Now it's no longer invisible!

4) Open the image again and crop it more towards the center.
(Be sure to desaturate it and add soft light as before!)
Set this layer to Multiply.

5) Now I wrote some words colored #ffffff (white) in a 7pt font (Georgia); handwritten fonts work too.
You can change the opacity of the words to make it look better, though I didn't.

6) Make some tiny text! Times New Roman or Georgie with 2pt font size works.
Just type random words, I usually use lyrics from a song I'm listening to. xD

7) Open the image again, with a new crop to the other side.
And make it perhaps a bit bigger than the other croppings.
(Also desaturating and adding soft light.)
Now, whichever works best for the icon, you can set this layer to screen or soft light.
I set this layer in my Christian Bale icon to soft light; it worked best.
I also lowered the opacity to 50%.
You can fiddle around with the options to see what you like, though.

8) Duplicate this new layer. Set it to soft light, 30% opacity.

9) Open this dandy gradient thing I made.
Set it BETWEEN your newest layers, and set it to multiply, 35% opacity.
You can make your own "dandy gradient thing" by selecting Layer > New Layer > Transparency.
Take your Paintbrush tool and, using the color #fd0505, paint over the right cropped image.

10) Viola! Fin! Your masterpiece complex icon is created. =D
