2nd place!

This weekend was the 2nd of 2 COM time trials in a week at NHMS. At the beginning of October, I finally broke into the 1:26 range, but hadn't been able to get below 1:26, so I made that my goal this weekend. Early on Saturday I managed to do that with a 1:25.9 or so, and throughout the weekend I was dipping down to 1:25.3 ( Read more... )

Congrats on 2nd place.

Part of me wants to know my lap time, another part of me is scared to see how close to (ie, over) 2 minutes it is (2 minute lap would be about an average of 45mph. I know I hit about 85-90 in the front straight, but went around turn 3 at around 30... so an average of 45 is probably optimistic :)

Returning to NMHS in a different car after being at The Glen or Tremblant is quite an eye-openner. NHMS is _SO_ different, and I now see why they say it is a hard track.

I'm surprised I got 9 days in, considering I didn't really get into the swing till July when my car _finally_ got on the road... not bad for a beginner.

Yeah, NHMS is very technical, and you don't get much of a break on it. The Glen or Tremblant or Lime Rock really flow in comparison.

That said, I think NHMS is a great track to learn on, since it's so technical. Just this weekend taking turn 11A a bit different meant another 4MPH at the pit wall (where they have the radar gun usually), and even more speed down the main straight.

9 days is great! I was only doing 10 or so each of my early years. I wonder if I can get 30 next year?

The biggest idea I had to get my mind around is literally 'throwing' the car into 2a & 2b with a pretty abrupt steering change, where the idea of doing that at The Glen or Tremblant is a no-no, as everything is pretty subtle changes at those tracks.

I now see the allure of being an instructor, being that you generally don't have to pay for track time (or it costs less). If I had to pay for 22 days, I think I'd be in the poor house :)

If we make the assumption of about $200/day, 22 days is $4400, and I think that is on the low side. Then add in gas, hotel, food, and car maintenance (I guess I got off easy with only a ball joint and strut housing as my major repairs... granted I did buy an extra set of tires and pads, but I haven't had to use them yet).

Egads... I should stop thinking about this or I'll have to sell my car next season just to pay for track time. At least as of a few hours ago, the MR2 has a nice enclosed home for the winter.
