Dar Williams at Paradise Rock Club

On Thursday Dar played at Paradise Rock Club, amazingly enough, for the first time. Jesse Harris (ex of Once Blue, one of my favorite bands that no one knows) opened and then later played in Dar's band.

The lighting guy at the Paradise was very good, so I was really happy with the shots, other than the overall quantity of light. In the past I've

I've never shot a band with a DSLR. I used to shoot with 1600 and 3200 all the time and I miss it lots. I've been despairing over that ability with digital, but I haven't investigated with my camera enough to know what it can and can't do.

I don't miss having to pay for push processing to get into the 1600/3200 range. I've got some great shots of Jane Siberry at the Somerville Theatre that were on film and pushed.

Which camera do you have?

I have a bit of envy for the new 5D, which has a usable ISO 6400 (and stuff at 1600/3200 is really amazing).

Canon 30D. I confess I find the options on it totally daunting. I must be getting old.

Ahh, that's nearly the same as mine (i've got a 40D now). Let me know if you need a hand with it.

Rock club lighting is always a tricky proposition. You got some very nice results, though! I am coveting a Nikon D300 for its low light capabilities but I am a long way from being able to get one. I have gotten pretty good results at shows by shooting 1600 film AT 1600 but telling the camera to use 1/60 and making it compensate. Worked well at Falcon Ridge and for the Arlo Guthrie shows I shot in November.
