In this part of the world, the people who want to try that kind of treatment are usually the ones who want to believe in it. The placebo effect is therefore a large factor.
I've had a kind of acupuncture on my back. It's a recurring pain which gets very, very bad sometimes, and the back doctor person I went to figured it's due to having a hyper-mobile spine with 1 pair of vertebrae which just aren't as flexible, so the joint gets stressed out and the muscle goes into spasm.
The needle treatment he used wasn't Chinese acupuncture as such, but rather a needle with a microscopic thread along it which you feel as a burning sensation as it's turned, which apparently stimulates blood flow (assumedly by ripping the muscle tissue apart). I can't say whether it helped or not, but there you go.
As with this stuff in general, I remain sceptical until there is demonstrable proof -- of which there is not a lot.
not myself but whereas I know people who swear by acupuncture I also know people who've had bad experiences with chinese herbal medicine so I'd avoid that if I was you - plus CHM is all about the tiger penis... ;)
