To be fair, it's usually a bad thing when an academic understands the value of artistic license. . . .

In my mind, I interpreted this as him giving her praise (and credit) by faint criticism.

Perhaps Asher needs to be assigned a new job: Proof-read the galleys. But don't expect all the changes to be made, see that "artistic license" section above.

And it is possible to have both artistic license and academic knowledge at the same time. It's called "Science Fiction" - the art of the possible, or even probable, we just haven't figured out how to do it.
