[New handwriting today, and it's quite beautiful. Those who read the original Chinese characters might appreciate the skill behind the expert strokes: flawless calligraphy, itself poetry of sorts, yet not slow and cautious but decisive, the writing emerging complete and without hesitation. Rabbit. It seems a good name. Rabbits are swift and free creatures.

Yeah I'm pretty fond of it, though I'm not an actual rabbit. I get asked that a lot.

As my understanding goes, actual rabbits cannot write. Of course, given our circumstances, my understanding might be entirely off the mark.

Interesting choice of name, but everyone has a story for theirs. That said, wouldn't mind hearing yours some day.

Good to meet you, and you'll find your footings soon enough. I'm called 鷹 (Hawk).

I am afraid that it carries some weight it might not mean to. Yet one should not be fickle when it comes to one's name.

I thank you, Hawk. I hope matters turn out well.

That's very true, although I wonder how many of us name ourselves on a whim. They ask the question very quickly considering we wake up without a memory of who we've been.

You seem like a sensible fellow, so I don't doubt it. Be prepared to find the most everyday things very strange sometimes, though. The people here come from very different places.

The words one speaks when still dazed from dreaming and waking, before the conscious mind has reared up to cast its armor about the inner self, may be deeply meaningful and indicative. It is not, to my mind, a bad method.

My apologies for pressing with my questions, yet I had thought that everyone here comes from the same place; that is, the Hall of Beginnings.

Hello to you, as well.

A thousand pardons, but it seems that there is a part of your words that I cannot read.

Oh, well that sounds like a personal problem. :) [draws smiley faces at the end of just about every remark in his journal]

[Gin you dick, confusing the emoticon-illiterate kid!]

Certainly, I am at fault. If it will not trouble you overmuch to interpret: what is the meaning of :)?

Your writing is lovely, Huo.

My name is Paladin, and it is my honor to make your acquaintance. Others have already advised you on finding a job, but I will add that it is good to look around fully--do not feel too rushed. I myself work at the clinic, we are located on Wellspring Island if ever you require our services, as well as with the Guard.

You credit me beyond my worth; the honor is mine, and your advice rings sound. It will not be an imposition, I hope, if I were to visit the clinic to observe your work? I am curious to know what kind of medicine might be practiced in a place such as this.

I would find it no imposition at all, though before I give you full permission I ought first check with Doctor Lezard. He directs and runs the clinic; a [very tiny pause] wizard of great prowess.

As we are from many lands, so are many ways of medicine practiced here. I personally practice magical healing and soothing of wounds, but where my talents fail, the sciences of those such as Doctor Simon may step in and make up for the failing. So, too, do I endeavor to learn his way as well.

[There's a brief but clear pause before the answer appears. Huo is digesting the whole magic bit. Magic tree is one thing, magic people quite another.]

Certainly, it is he who masters both the natural and that which is beyond the natural, the seen and the unseen, who holds the greatest wisdom. Please be so kind as to inquire of your master. It sounds as though there is much of interest to see.
