Ghost of a Songbird

The cage is empty now
and the tree limbs vow revenge
on empty nests
and featherless wings
that are now
just ghosts of song birds in spring

I've cradled the bones
for so long I didn't see the storm
roll in as if on a wave of grief

I was holding onto the body
just trying to remember the song

The cradling and holding bring such emotion into this piece even though the message revolves around concepts of loss and emptiness. It's a good counter because it feels honest, raw and human.

"I've cradled the bones

for so long..."

Metaphorically and literally this holds such gravity and is understood by those struggling. Loss is something we are not prepared for and I think we shouldn't be if we are to retain our compassion and empathy. Still, it is hard, and especially for those who are left behind. HUGS.

Another well written poem, my friend. I really do like your style of writing.

Thabk you so much. I agree with you, loss isn't something we should be prepared for. As much as it rattles us, it's part of the human experience that ultimately makes life mean something. That's a hard thing to remember when you're in the middle of it, but knowing that does help a little. Writing definitely helps. I'm glad the words are starting to flow now and I'm so glad you're here with me. Reading your poetry is as inspiring as it always was.
