Fingers were pressed

into soft places

that cried out at the yielding

the indigo of the night

left bruises upon the pale moon

and the limbs of trees

were a gentler cage

than arms that held on too long

I saw the end of everything

and it was the beginning of something

like the fall of snow on freshly tilled earth

I was silently yawning into the dawn

fighting a scream

but the light sparkling in the new day

This life swallows me whole

as I consume it

bite by careful bite.

I am tired of being held

by the tongue

while the song is smothered

in another's mouth.

I circle back to the beginning

each time I say goodnight.

The sun bites the horizon

and I choke on the light.

I find myself here again

in the dark place,

that is not an absence of light,

but an abundance of everything

so tightly wound together

there is no seeing clearly.

I am a shattered mirror.

I can still look into the broken pieces

and see the fragments of what I used to be

and something that somehow

feels more complete.
