Which is why we are in the situation we're in...it is really hard to debate issues when folks take disagreement as a personal attack, or make disagreeing a personal attack.
There is plenty of pettiness to go around. Guess it's up to me to keep my discourse appropriate, but that hasn't ever changed...
"It's just funny that all the people who cursed at me for the last 8 years are asking something of me that they have been unwilling to do themselves before now."
Rats, Ani's comment is the kind I usually make. "All?" I'm not much good with sweeping statements, putting folks in boxes, or slapping labels on things or people...which is why, overall, I agree with you. It IS weird, isn't it?
My beloved godson told his young son it was OK to hate Bush...in my worldview, it's hardly OK to hate ANYone, and I told him so. As you say, the office still commands our respect.
Mine, anyway. Doesn't matter if I'm not enamoured of the man...
I'd also argue that dissent has been un-patriotic for the past 4+ years - at least where I am. 4-5 years ago I was out, speaking with a friend that I didn't agree with the policies of Bush - not hate talking, but explaining where I was coming from and two random guys got really nasty with me because I disagreed with the president = unpatriotic. I only tend to talk politics with people now if I'm in someone's home. It got old real quick. And I may overhear conversations that I don't agree with when I'm out - but I don't attack those people (I may talk about it later - LOL). Anyways, I digress--
But - I've actually been reading what you're referring to and shaking my head about it - because I totally agree with you (even though I voted for the president elect). As kaliopi said, the winners can afford to magnanimous - I guess.
Dissent is healthy. Anyways, since I'm debating just deleting this b/c I rambeled I'm going to hit post before I do so.
I know you have. I think I unintentionally even got you one time, when I reread what I posted it wasn't what I meant to say. But I didn't read it right away
( ... )
Me too, but to be faire (at least as long as that's still allowed, there are people who LOVE the 1st amendment, unless you you have the gall to disagree with them), I've done a bit of clobbering myself. I've never been one to stand idly by when b/s is being spouted, but I fear the loyal opposition may become an endangered species soon.

There would need to be a paradigm shift that created more profit in consensus than disagreement.
It goes back to the classic statement that if people actually followed what the 4 major religions said in their documentation we'd be better off.
People tend to foul things up.

And yeh, I've changed my attitude since the 60s.
