With the people here, I'd be satisfied with an irrelevant philosophical discussion. Well, maybe not.

I've found that I can usually only get interested in something if it has a direct bearing on myself or those close to me or people I care about or a tangible relevance to stuff in the world, but I sort of dismissed this as my own self-centeredness.

When do you leave for college?

I think "a tangible relevance to stuff in the world" encompasses enough for that to not be self-centeredness.

the insular college bubble bothered me off and on last year, but i think my location made it worse. like, it's pretty easy to feel like shit when you're taking the train into the city and debating hindu philosophy with other rich northwestern kids and then you notice that sitting next to you is a guy who probably hasn't eaten in a few days.

that said, i figure that since somehow i've found myself lucky enough to be allowed to do nothing but learn for 4 years, i'm going to take advantage of it. plus, feeling yourself get exponentially smarter is pretty exciting.

hellooo fellow nourse-er. i am in the same predicament in terms of classes - I am taking none that are relevant to my major. I'm taking French, Calc II, and the Freshman Sem for 'Growing up Cross-Culturally'. No Poli-Sci for me, though that is probably going to be my focus. I'm thinking about it as a way to 'broaden my horizons', rather than thinking, 'shit, I couldn't get into the classes I needed to get into.' Oh well, we have 11 more tri's to go, after all.
See you soon!

I think it'll end up being for the best. I know for my part, I'm kind of glad that I won't be getting engrossed in my primary field of interest right away--less of a chance of me missing something.
