Basics of Beatlemania

Apr 29, 2010 20:34

So a friend asked me to educate her on the Beatles.

I'm not sure I can do it justice and I know I can't talk about them without talking about the fandom. My mom was a Beatlemaniac and is still a PaulGirl. When I say that I'm third generation fangirl, I'm not joking. My grandmother and mother were fangirls. I was raised to be one.

You forgot the bit where Sargeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was influenced by the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds! :P
Forget Beatles vs. Rolling Stones, my dad would pick the Beach Boys every time. My mom is not a fangirl, and does not understand the fannish impulse, but dad? Total Beach Boys fanboy.

Mom concedes Pet Sounds and counters that Paul Is Pretty and your argument is irrelevent.

Heh. I'll admit I never looked at any of the Beach Boys (even the younger pics) and thought, "Oooh! Pretty!" But if you can hear music in the womb, that's how long I've been listening to them, so.

Fabulous recap! I remember watching them on Ed Sullivan, playing my 45 of "I Wanna Hold Your Hand."

(And it was really, really difficult to decide which Beatles icon to use.)

Mom had a British pen pal who told her about them. She and her bff Eileen bugged the record store and got him to find a copy of My Bonnie with Tony Sheridan. My grandfather was almost relieved when I Wanna Hold Your Hand came out because at least she rotated them.

My grandmother was a Sinatra fan so Grandpa was never able to STOP Mom from playing them. Over and over and over.

I was flist wandering as well. Great summary; I'll have to show it to my girls (14 and 16) who don't quite get mom's obsession ( ... )

Mom says I was VERY put out when I was 5 and found out The Beatles broke up. "Why did nobody tell me?"

LOL

Yeah - I don't know WHY people want to treat The Beatles like anything other a fandom. I laugh and laugh because it only makes them sound pretentious. And it alienates new fans. They were a rock band! Admit it was all about the Pretty first!

Here via titti -- awesome, awesome post! I've always been a fan of the Beatles -- my mom knew kick ass music when she heard it! -- but it wasn't until about six or so years ago that I really got into them, and then into the online fandom. Which is interesting to read here about them being the first fandom, in a way, because I really agree. Getting into them as a second generation fan online was certainly different but fun. And they've definitely spoiled me for all other bands or musicians when it comes to fandom. ;) (Hell, I wish it was even bigger online now! sighhh.)

Anyway, thanks for a cool post! :)

Interestingly enough, my mom's taken a reverse journey. While I was picking her brain for this she FINALLY got the distinction between being a fan and being in fandom. Because when she talks about The Beatles, she can't do it without talking about her friends - including the pen pals she's never met - and all the people who didn't get it (Grandpa) and the ones that did but didn't share it (the Stones fans and her mom).

But yeah - I look at the old footage of the fans and I look at footage of Supernatural conventions and there are obvious correlations. It's the same bond between fans. With the Beatles the phenomenon met Mass Communication and it changed the world.
