Rose, It was very much a compliment to be told that you don't live extravagently. Extravagent is often associated with snoody, stuck-up, condescending, etc. Even the definition says being extravagent is not wise, is unreasonable, and not justifiable.

And you forgot to add the cutest part of the story. After she said "Rose, sweety, you don't live very extravagantly.", you said, "What's extravagent mean?" which is perfect and shows that you're truly an awesome person.

Hopefully Marty is right and the intention was misunderstood.

However, people are inherently stupid. Remembering that often takes much of the sting out of interacting with them.
