In terms of size of hex or total number of hexes?

Seconded.

I've got a board-backed hex grid that's about three foot square, but that's because the hexes are big; it's only ten or twelve hexes on a side.

It's a bit smaller than 3'x3' (the hex grid) with 1" hexes - is that sufficient? And when do you need it?
