Dwarves that get really unhappy have...bad things happen. Generally they do one of three things:
1) Go suicidal, and throw themselves into the nearest pit/pond/magma.
2) Go depressed/melancholy, and wander around refusing to eat until they starve.
3) Go beserk, and start wrecking buildings and attacking other dwarves.
If your star weaver goes beserk near a skilled military dwarf, you lose the weaver. Sad, but sometimes inevitable.
If your Tigerpixie goes beserk, you lose potentially everything, and are left with a single remorseless killer, standing in the wreckage of her former home.
1) Her wardog was unfortunately killed by a troglodyte in front of her.
2) She has no skills that are particularly useful in civilian life. At the moment every time a tour of duty ends, she gets a sad thought "was unhappy at being stood down recently". Of course, if she stays on duty too long then "was unhappy at a long patrol recently"
Several troglodyte attacks meant the only fully equipped squad I had pulled a lot of overtime recently, and was frequently taken on and off duty. I think things will get better now the cavern is segregated.
