The University has kept me awake at night. Not through noise, or anxiety, but toward a discontent with the realization that this all leads us to nothing. That's what keeps me awake now and my mind away from the thoughts of queueing structure and net present values that I am supposed to be programmed to learn. I should be writing a paper on the ( Read more... )

i wanted to make the exact same comment about distribution.

and to add to yours, i love my science classes, but i'm so glad i was forced to take distribution courses because most of the social science/humanities classes i probably wouldn't have taken have been extremely interesting. and, while no one outside of the science fields (usually) wants to hear about chemical messengers, information i've learned in history, anthro, etc. classes makes very good conversation material.

Being away from U of M this semester and talking with people from various schools around the country (and many small liberal arts school) I realize that there really is a diference. What you ask for from the U of M system is in fact offered by other schools. So maybe the choice has to come senior year of high school, when you select the college that will allow you opportunities of greater exploration. When you are a school (such of U of M) trying to facilitate the education of 24,000 undergrads it is hard to let every student design their own major, determine what is most interesting to them, and have only small classes with ample time for discussion and exploration. I think U of M tries to expose its students to a variety of ideas through distribution but has to work within its framework as a huge, public university.

I don't understand all this whining about educational requirements. It's like all the science-lovers who always cry that they shouldn't have to learn a foreign language. Trust me, Americans DO need to learn a foreign language! And if you're whining about it, then you probably DEFINITELY need to be 'forced' to learn one ( ... )
