Happy New Year (and parakeets!)

wieselkind and I were having a cup of tea this morning before she had to catch her train, when a very loud screeching noise came from outside. I looked up and saw three birds, and was about to turn away again when Heather noted they were parakeets! I should have recognized the shape in flight but I don't really expect to see parrots in England so it wasn't

I hope they come back. It's very cheering to see bright green against the grey England sky.

There were some fat wood pigeons in the yard this morning.

There've been parakeets in various places, Windsor Great Park has a huge colony.

I saw one last year from the train, but I've never seen a flock in Lewisham.

Oooh! I'd heard there were colonies in London but I've never seen any myself. Not yet. (Fingers crossed.)

Apparently they're mostly the southeast and Richmond.

Apparently they roost in the hundreds at Hither Green cemetery. I must go look sometime.

There is a small documentary on youtube about them, and yes, it is very British. :)
