Ennis found a beer and a place in a corner and folded in on himself to watch the fellas shoot pool.  A buck-toothed b-girl joined them, smiling big and laughing loud, leaning her shelfy chest on the table, drinking from everybody’s cup, and generally making herself available.  Roy pointed her in Ennis’s direction, letting on that the boy needed ( Read more... )

Pfew, Jack made it, and what an entrance. As usual, this part has as many wonderful phrases and images as there are words. You definitely love language, it's clear. Some favorites:

cleanest dirty shirts
mushing through the slush
leaning her shelfy chest on the table

Wonder what Ennis is going to make of being caught in a situation that he hadn't expected, since until then he had been "getting by" with the guys in his sorta collegial milieu. But then again, holy $hit, Jack is actually there. Can't even imagine what they will do, where they will go, but nor could I imagine half the twists and turns of this wonderful tale!

Whew, scary crowd. Those roughneck dudes would be scary anytime, IMO, but drunk? Bad news. This ***their grins nothing more than a baring of teeth, as they turned on the odd duck*** made my blood run cold.

Jack coming in and saving the day is fascinating. ***the smell of ozone dissipated in the wake of a lightning strike narrowly averted***

As always, looking forward to more!!

Jack made it at last, and covered his tracks well.
This is a beautiful sentence;
" The word fiancée worked a weather change on the mob and when Jack produced a photo from his wallet of him and Ennis with the Beers in front of the filling station, the smell of ozone dissipated in the wake of a lightning strike narrowly averted."
I'm just re-reading AP's Heart Songs, and your style is uncannily like hers.
Thank you for sharing this with us,
Kate
