When I was in grade school, I actually had a friend (about 2 years older) who said she used a hat pin for defense. I didn't even know what it was. She didn't wear a hat either. Apparently she had it stuck in her clothes.

I can't help but wonder at what she went through that she felt the need to covertly arm herself so young.
