I prefer books that read like histories. I don't need the battle play by play though. I like period pieces. Especially about royalty in England and France. I'd like to read one set in Spain. I like books by foreign writers set in their homeland or are specific to their culture (Kite Runner, Brick Lane). I like mystery novels set in ancient Rome. ( Read more... )

Have you read any books by Philipa Gregory? She has wonderful historical fiction. I would read the Boleyn Inheritance. Very good.

I don't know how good the English translations are but you could look into the Alatriste books by Arturo Pérez-Reverte. There was a movie a couple years back. Also "Roman blood" by Steven Saylor.
