The boy who sat on the bed was thin and covered with a smattering of bruises, the most visible ones being harsh fingerprints marring the lines of his arms with a sickly mixture of blacks, blues, greens, and yellows. Burt swallowed thickly and approached the bed

The doctors and nurses had warned him, but Burt wasn't prepared for the all out war going on in front of him. Kurt kicked and screamed, his voice high and shrill, as two male nurses gripped his arms to hold him still. Two more men arrived soon after to hold his flailing legs down. Kurt was a wild thing. At home, he screamed and cried, hit things and people. He had the mentality of someone much younger, unable to read or even say much beyond what he'd learned as a child. By the time Finn finally began to bring Rachel back around, the family had fallen into a routine. Angie came by in the morning to get Kurt up and moving as everybody was getting ready for work and school. The two of them stayed at home for the rest of the day. Kurt liked to watch TV, though he didn't seem very particular about what was playing. Mostly, they watched soaps together

Back in the kitchen, Angie watched Kurt carefully. She’d been trying to teach him to read before Finn got home, but his concentration was shot now. He was staring at the door to the living room with a frown on his face
