I took a few days off work and as I anticipated got depressed because I didn't do anything I was planning.  Today was only the first day, though.  It could get better.

I wish I'd had the energy to keep up on LJ and help you with this. There's freeware called CutePDF you can get here: http://www.cutepdf.com/download/CuteWriter.exe

Install it and it appears to be a printer when you go to print. Instead of printing to the printer, it pops a window asking where to save it as a PDF and what you want to name it. It's much cleaner than scanning, and quicker too!

Wow! Thanks for this, Linda. Although my fax is up and working now, I downloaded this anyway as it definately can be useful.
