On my poor laptop.
I first read this manga when I was a little girl, how could I have known this pair is actually based on real people?
Oh gosh, what was Ms. Ikeda thinking while drawing this? I guess it would break thousand hearts if people get to know "Lady Oscar", the rose of Versailles is modelled after a man...

OOh, must make an Iason/Raoul icon... *wanders off*
I always thought these two dudes in my icon were modelled after magna. It was my first encounter with two dudes together. I was a lil girl of thirteen when I first discovered slash. But I had no idea slash existed! Or fan fiction! Or magna! Or...anything! Eeek. All I knew is that the Golden Youth and Wez looked very hawt together!

Awww, Iason/Raoul! Ai no Kusabi was a primer for me into the slash world as well! LOL.
The two in your icon indeed look very manga-ish. But it's a bit hard to tell if the manga artist took the image from real people or vice versa.

Back in the 70s the slash/yaoi manga was still a courageous idea. Ms. Yasuko Aoike is one of the first mangakas who brought the gay scene in, and her most famous character (Eroica) is modelled after Robert as well : p.

Back in the 70s it was totally fashion in Japan to adore the "ideal blond" type, golden long hair, blue eyes, tall and beautiful. Robert in his youth was almost a living male Barbie- doll in their eyes.
Jimmy, with his dark hair and grey-green eyes and the mystique around him, was probably more exotic and attractive for the western girls. But it didn't have that strong affection on the japanese girls.
That's what I've got from some japanese female rock fans, and I once talked with Miss Nastukawa(she was a fan and photographer when Led Zeppelin went to Japan), she said Jimmy's aura was bewitching(notice both the positiveness and negativeness there) and it scared her.
