Hmm...well from what I know, a large part of the afterlife is what you believe in. If you believe you will go to hell, then you will go to hell, for example. But that is not everything, because otherwise a great amount of souls would go to hell who do not deserve it. Similarly, a number of people who feel no remorse for their actions, or who believe their crimes were done for virtuous reasons, would not go to hell.

Hence why souls are generally judged before entering the afterlife.
