yo, koipond  ! I promised you philosophical waxing about the social value of LARP.

I'm making good.

Here's the thing - there's something about the quality of roleplay I see from my regular players that transcends "roleplaying".  It becomes personally cathartic, it becomes Sacred, it becomes creativity and joy and trust and humanity manifest.  Like a ( Read more... )

We can do things we'd never do in real life

Yep - this is one of the 2big reasons I will never
ever do live-combat games: no special abilities.

(We now return you to your regularly scheduled
higher-plane discussion)

I've done live-combat game(s). Not counting the high-impact hide-and-seek, cops-and-robbers, knights-and-ladies, wagon-train games of my childhood, I hated the experience.

And came out of it with a LOATHING for air-soft guns. I LARP to be part of the magic, not to end up with a fat lip. hatehatehate airsoft. and dislike actual combat almost as much.

Yeah... much better to apply a little bit more imagination than try to look cool at the risk of being dragged off into a back room somewhere and threatened by burly fellows who are playing very different games.

well, yes. then there's also that.

I'm not a big fan of burly fellows with an eye towards very different games.

I just RP to escape...

Escape the irritation of a job, the boringness of daily tasks, and the overwhelming crap the world likes to throw at me.

Besides, in RP I can usually make a difference, and sometimes even change things for the better. Try doing THAT in the real world without a permit!

Ahh, see, I maintain that RP is about more than escapism.

It's about seeing change, about being able to impact A world. and you can't convince me that it's doesn't add value to you, as a person, to have had these experiences where you could affect change, watch somebody's position shift, move their boundaries without a permit. You might not see it, and it might not have been as profound for you as I've seen it in some of our players, but I'm willing to bet it's there.

I submit that getting to change a fake world escapism.
But I also submit that I have a prejudice against the word
"escapism", because it makes the whole enterprise sound like a
weird addiction for losers instead of just an enjoyable break
in the routine.

Never said that it was JUST escape. I will grant that I bring things from the game to the real world, and vice versa.

However, for me at least, it is still an escape.

Now this is a perspective I never would have seen.

Thank you!

Oh and hug a Kate for me. It feels like I never see that one around anymore.

What a fabulous post, my dear! DH was big into RP before I met him. I never could "get it" ... no matter how many times he tried to explain it to me. At last, some 12 years later, you bring it all in to focus for me. You've always been so good at that! Missing you tons (I've been sooooo OP...want to come around again soon). And thanks for your sweet comments on DS!! Smooches!
