Good points, and I totally agree that African-Americans have contributed a great deal to American and world culture. Furthermore, genius seems to perservere no matter what conditions it is put in.

The problem I have is that highly intelligent and creative people tend not to become drug dealers. Most thugs of the sort I have encountered tend to be as intellectually curious as a brick. Having a show with a creative black person is something I applaud, but having a drug dealer be that fellow goes beyond the suspension of disbelief. If there was a show about inbred redneck families shooting each other in Tennessee, you would laugh if one of them turned out to be an intellectual figure. Sure, there are intelligent and creative rednecks- but they're the ones who left town. "Get offa mah propetay! I gotza kill mah pigs and read mah Proust!"

"Yes, television is sensationalist, and yes, highly, highly unrealistic. That doesn't mean that is totally fictitious."

Describes The Wire pretty well. That would offend every fan of the show, too. :)
