"There's always someone worse off than you are"

I really hate it when people say "There's always someone worse off than you are" to me, or to someone else suffering from depression or other debilitating conditions. I made the mistake of venting to a friend of mine on Facebook about how down I was over my appearance, not being able to afford surgery and my appearance (he asked). I knew he wasn' ( Read more... )

You're right - it's such a dismissive and patronizing thing to say to someone. I listen to anyone's problems and would never say such a thing. Perhaps it might not seem like a problem in the eye of the beholder, but perhaps that problem is causing the person a lot of anguish.

A male friend of mine said that to me last night when I was telling him I was depressed. I wanted to scream, literally.

I think the best we can do is make a conscious effort not to say these things to other people, as we know how crappy it feels. It's nothing more than a cop out. I would rather the person just say "fuck you, I don't feel like listening to you anymore".

Some parts of Florida are better for rights than others. Miami is terrible - I have no rights here as a transgender individual. I can be fired from a job, denied use of the correct restroom, denied housing and there's little protection from harassment. For such a so-called vibrant city, this city is probably the most backward ass, ignorant city in the United States. Put it this way, I felt safer in Atlanta and Charlotte.
