So, you guys. I am going to start up a few different classes starting in April (since it's the beginning of the school year in Japan), and one that I'm planning to start is an Asian drama discussion group. Why? Because I can. :D So, I was wondering if anyone has suggestions on what might be good. A couple of things I'm trying to keep in mind ( Read more... )

First one that comes to mind that's not on the list, at least, is VOICE. I think Smile and Ryuusei would work well. (I haven't seen all the dramas on the list, so those are a couple.) And now that I think about it, Maou would be interesting because of Toma's character having so much guilt and all that.

I saw that were you teaching an Asian drama discussion group, and I think that's awesome. Good luck!

Unless you are going to be prepared for TOUGH questions, id say no to sunao ni narenakute! theres adultery, theres homosexuality, theres abortion, there's suicide...it's a heavy drama. I really liked it but it might be too controversial for a Christian group drama discussion.

Something with substance that would be exciting and possibly applicable is Maou. It deals with good and evil themes and also themes of forgiveness, revenge, etc. I think this would provide a good Moral discussion but there is murder so also take caution.

Nobuta wo Produce may be the cleanest and is self-empowering so that may be good.

True... It's not that I'd be afraid to talk about those themes, but it is a LOT in one drama. Plus it's pretty likely that not everyone that will becoming will be fluent in English, so that would make a lot of that stuff hard to talk about, probably.

So Maou and Nobuta, you say? Noted. :D Thanks for your opinion! Maou is one of my all-time favorites, so I've been kinda leaning toward it, but I'm trying not to choose it just because I like it, haha.

Since what I wanted to suggest have been mentioned by others and you yourself, I think I'll recommend Massugu na Otoko. I think it would be quite interesting and can provoke some discussions as well, seeing how the main character is living his life so straight-forwardly and holds his values strongly.

I shall keep that in mind~ Who was in that one again? Also, which drama were you wanting to suggest? If a bunch of people say the same one, that kind of helps me too. Like, it might be a good idea if a lot of people agree on the same one. (lol were you gonna say Maou?)

Sato Ryuta! Fukada Kyoko's character was super annoying though lol. And yeee you know it lol. But yeah, that would be an interesting talk about revenge and stuff; together along with Ryusei!

Ahhhhh now I remember! I watched the first episode and I couldn't stand her, so that's why I didn't continue it lol.

I was kinda thinking that too! And kind of looking at where the different characters are coming from, their motives and stuff, you know? Hmmmm, we shall see~

i have only seen a few of these but the ones i kno on the list will be good for topics since some of them cover so many different themes. i agree that Maou will be good but could also be difficult. even so i think it covers a wide range of topic ideas and will definitely lead to an interesting discussion. GO FOR IT SENSEI!!!!

Though I haven't seen Iryu, the idea of medicine, life, and death could be a good discussion topic. Perhaps heavy to begin with, but yea.

I think JIN brings up interesting topics -if you could change the future using the past, what would you do? Do you think the past should be changed in that way?

Ryusei no Kizuna brings up good points about revenge and family closeness.
Would you go that far to avenge a family member?

On a side note, I find that a common theme in jdramas is their "ganbatte" mentality, probably because it's so pervasive in their culture (but you would know more about your audience than I would ^^). You could probably discuss how God fits into that mentality.

Sounds very exciting, plus you'll have a lot to work with :) Good luck!
