I think you're right, and this first tropical "storm" is going to be nothing more than some rain along the Atlantic coast. It probably won't even affect me, here near the northern part of the Jersey Shore. (So far, all of this summer's severe weather has happened over land... and somehow, almost all of it seems to go everywhere but where I am. There was a confirmed F1 tornado a few days ago... about forty miles south of me. All I got was plain rain.) I do hope that this late start to the tropical storm season doesn't mean we'll still be watching out for hurricanes in November!
I've been looking around at various satellite pictures online, and found this world satellite composite. Looks as if someone is having trouble over Madagascar... at least, on the map timestamped "31 July 2004 0600 GMT", there's an odd-shaped patch there which not only doesn't match the rest of the weather displayed, it also contains a line of static. Who watches the Indian Ocean?
Our friends at Intellicast are good, indeed. Well, the US has a lot of satellites in a lot of places. Honestly, I don't know who watches the Indian Ocean but it appears their little "static problem" has been resolved. :D

Looks as if your sister and I were both wrong about that tropical depression...
