My town was on national news and I missed the whole thing!

Some of you may have heard about the storms that hit northern Illinois on Thursday--Meryl Marie heard about it on NBC news and called on Saturday, bless her heart!   My parents heard about us on the Weather Channel (what can I say, they're elderly Americans so of COURSE it's their favorite station ;-D )

The town where I live was 'ground zero' for  ( Read more... )

Thanks, Ellin dear. It reminded me of what happened in France a few years ago, big winds toppling so many trees. Weird weather!

What you've been through! I'm so glad you came through all right, considering. (Not a tornado, etc.) I am sorry to hear about all the damage to homes, and especially to huge old trees that take so long to grow, but nature's like that. We had to put in a sump pump a few years ago (for a city-wide project, to keep storm water out of the sanitary sewer lines, where it had been going before), so now the basement does leak in very heavy storms since the sump pump empties into drain tile outside in the landscaping that wasn't built to handle that much extra water. But now that you talk about power outages it occurs to me that we'd be in terrible shape if the power went out, too. Maybe we should get one of these batteries. What kind do you have, Goldenberry? I've never shopped for one.

P.S. Your post was just really well-written. It was a pleasure to read. I loved reading about the neighbours pulling together, too. That is always so encouraging to hear.

Mechtild, I had never HEARD of a sump pump until we moved to Illinois!

Our system and battery are Aquanot. The battery is a sealed, gel-filled, no-maintenance Aquanot battery that is supposed to last 5 years and then be replaced. I highly recommend it!

Thanks for your kind words about my words. :-) And the neighbors have been great. At one point, one side of the street had power, and there were many extension cords crossing the street to supply people who had none. I saw this all over town!

Glad to hear there were positives that came out of such an experience. I love that certain events break down some of the day to day barriers between neighbors--but maybe such a thing could be done with a little less drama!!!! And YAY that trees missed your house!!! Happy to hear you all are okay.

Thank you! Yes, it was great to have people pulling together and helping each other out, but on the whole, I hope never to repeat such an experience!
