But you must admit, Oldham's passionate songwriting about his hobo killin' experience is very innovative, for it is responsible for inspiring literally thousands of other artists to rape and kill hobos themselves. Will Oldham breaks free of the folk-rock tradition of the 60s that started with such luminaries as Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and Phil Ochs. These are men, who you probably remember from your history books, would take turns raping and killing rich people and then stealing their money and giving it to Marxist hippie counter-culture revolutionaries so they could afford to purchase the necessary materials to plant bombs in court houses and R.O.T.C. offices. Will Oldham has completely subverted that convention by vowing only to hassle the underprivildged. He is a violent reactionary and that's why everyone loves him. Well, everyone except for the hobos, that is.
