2nd worst play in the history of Scrabble

Dec 29, 2010 21:21

I transposed tiles on a 212-point out bingo. Just when I thought I had figured out every possible way to lose a game. I thought it was the worst play in the history of Scrabble but Andy reminded me he has already staked that claim with his INET* game.

I don't know how it happened. I just put down the tiles wrong. It was the last game of the night and I was a little tired but that is no excuse. It was supposed to be liquored through the E with a blank L but I switched the U and O. Neither of us noticed until about 10 seconds after the game ended, when orange pants (my opponent) said "wait! hold! challenge!" and I still didn't know what was going on until he pointed to the U and the O. Kudos to him for noticing in time. It would have been almost as bad for him if he had let that go.

It would have been my highest scoring play ever, and also may have affected the final standings (not sure, maybe not).

Sorry man, nothing you can do but move on to the next game :/ How much time can pass before it's too late to be challenged?

I've had opponents flip over their racks and say "you get X from me" and THEN want to challenge my final play, which i believe is illegal. I usually just let them since it's usually a valid word, or I will win anyway, but I feel like a lot of people are unaware of the end-of-game rules like that.

I won the 2nd early bird today so I'm not beating myself up about this anymore. :)

I believe you have 20 seconds to hold or challenge after the clock has been neutralized. It definitely was less than 20 seconds in this case so I had to let him challenge it off.

RESTAInG is still worse than INET or FOUO/OUTDINE, or COPPER_DE (not Andy, iceplanets), but yikes this may truly be the second oopsiest :(

Drink up!

Ironically, the play he misspelled was liquored

Not ironic at all. If I remember correctly, Bradley is a teetotaler.

I remember Joe Edley once giving bricap a spot to play QAT in the endgame, when no spot had previously existed.

I just solemnly drank a shot of tequila in your honor. Well, it was out already, but the second shot was definitely poured after I read this.
