"I assure you" is probably one of the most misused and abused phrases in the English language, throughout history. We always use it when we're trying to force something that really shouldn't be forced, like confidence in someone or something. Wanting to make things right but not necessarily wanting to be friends is still selfish, isn't it? It's still self-serving. What if I put it this way: what if I'd just like to be on okay terms, so we don't HAVE to avoid each other and think wistfully of the days when our possible meetings weren't fraught with anger and pain? So I've been doing this thing at work when I'm bored/need to look like I'm working (which is a lot, when you're called to a self-paced high school in the 'burbs).
