Blu-ray discs... do you need a special player for them or can you use normal DVD players for them?

Blu-ray discs are physically different.. so you'll need a Blu-ray player.
(Although I think some Blu-ray players are backward compatible and will also play DVD)

A Playstation 3 will also play Blu-ray disks (if I recall correctly).
