So it seems that I am in need of a motorized vehicle by April. Unfortunately, guys, I have never been car shopping. Like, ever. I have no idea what is a good brand, what constitutes a car in good condition, what to look for, what is a good amount of miles or price, etc. All I know is that I want a smallish, four-door something that won't fall

Anyway, car stuff. I'm actually in the same boat as you because I don't even have a driver's license since I'm lame like that. What do you need the car for anyway? In my family though, we've always driven subarus, so that's all I know really. But they are good cars! I also hear volvos are good because they last forever and ever. Even if you find an old, used volvo, you can probably get some good use out of it.
WELL, WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T GET CAKE ALL OVER THE CAR SEATS, BECAUSE THAT'S JUST UNCOOL. >:(

Well, I've had my license for, like, eight years (lawl, so oooollddd), but in Boston I haven't really had a need to drive. But in April, our offices are moving and it'll be a real pain in the ass to keep taking the subway. ^^;
Oohhh yah, my mom had a Volvo for, like, ever. They do last a while.

That said, some one of my car-owning friends bought that car that used to transform in the commercials and advertise in NewType. It's infinitely customizable or something, and cheap for a slightly used/new car. Too bad I can't remember the name.
Here is everything I know about car buying from my parents:
A car depreciates in value each year you own it. Cars depreciate the most after the first 6 months or one year, so to get the most for your money, buy a car that's 2-3 years old. I also think they're given years a year ahead of the current year (but I'm not sure) so if you see 2009 cars available now maybe look for a 2006 model?
I don't think you'd actually spend 12K on a car because of the way financing works - don't most people sell their cars before paying them off completely?
I haven't owned a car since gas cost $0.98, so I'll shut up now.

I've kind of gotten more of a handle, I think, as I rather think that a Honda Civic would work out well for me, as they seem to be robust and fuel-efficient cars to start with. But more reading up definitely couldn't hurt.
Ugh, gas. Don't even remind me about gas. My sister wants me to take her 2001 jeep Cherokee that gets something like 16 MPG, except supposedly in the next year or two gas will be up to four bucks a gallon. *Cry.*

On a tangental note, I actually tried to ebay up a Ford Prefect as well for the fun of it. As it is probably the only other car in existence that would require me to be permanently loling in and eating cake out of.
