My mother fell down and broke her hip last night. She's only 64. She's okay, but the ball of her femur has to be replaced. I was heading out there on Friday anyway, but it appears I will be spending my vacation taking care of her

Ugh. I'm sorry, and I wish there was something I could say to help, other than "I know how you feel."
My mom is 62, but she is anything but in prime physical condition for a 62 year old. If I had to guess, she's more got the body of a 70+ person, lives alone, and has next to zero social life. And now she's retired. If she was to slip and fall in her apartment, it'd be a story much like what happened to your mother--and if it was serious, I have to wonder how long it'd take for anyone to even notice. :/
So, yeah. It's something that's crossed my mind, too.
If you need me, call me, I'll give you my phone number. If nothing else, I can pass you over to my sister, the nurse, who worked for hospice for 20 years, and orthopedics before that, if you have any questions that you need answering. If she's in the hospital, it'll likely be a lot of bringing stuff from the home and returning it, if she's at home, there'll be other things involved.
And for some, it's not too young. My dad's in his mid-80s and is rather hale and hearty, and is planning on driving his RV out to Seattle this summer. From Florida. Towing a car.
