Well, the new library near David and I that opened only about 5 weeks ago is one of the libraries being closed in a 'cost cutting' move by the County. Now really! Did they not know what they were going to do when they built it and opened it with such fanfare?!? I'm smelling some 'political blackmail' here. A 5 week old building will now be ( Read more... )

They wouldn't have to close that library, if they weren't so stupidly wasteful with their money. I hope they don't close MY library...

I was shocked to see that they are even going to close the Myers Park branch---gasp! Not the rich people too!!! I can't imagine how busy the Univ Regional branch will be now. I sure love the library and the parks, and they always seem to pick on them first. The Charlotte library is nationally recognized as exemplary, but I guess that's out the window, now. Or maybe not, since every library nationwide is bound to be suffering as well.

Got my fingers crossed for you at work.

I think it is a terrible thing to close libraries. For a while, the Toronto Library Board was starting to do that, but public opinion (plus lots of media snarling) put paid to it. They have closed some, but others stay open longer.

We're lucky here in Mississauga, the library near us is only about 10 mins walk away, and they are opening on Sundays till summer time (just 1-5), then again after Thanksgiving for the winter. A brand new one just opened up northwest of us, too, with a lot of fanfare. zI couldn't care less about Sundays, but there are many people with children around here and I'm sure it will be useful for them. The library is always jam packed, and I love seeing 8 and 10 year-olds going out with a pile of books instead of DVDs, too. Most of the clientele is Sub-Continent Asian around here.
