Oof. There is nothing like attending a seminar on Passion in the Workplace* and then reading friends of friends' fabulously interesting LJ's to make me feel like I'm wasting my life. (Hi,

Sorry I don't have any suggestions for getting people to come to a party. Dunno if you like the idea, but I think that sometimes games can make good mixers. It's structured, which can make it easier to interact with new people. Depending on how active you expect the group to be, something like Cranium or Taboo might be good for the less shy (who probably don't need help interacting). I was recently introduced to Fluxx (at a Hive-based gathering), and that was pretty fun. It's a card game with changing rules, and you can kind of choose how mean you're going to be to the other players. I later found it at a specialty store -- I don't know if it's worth trying to order online by next weekend.
Good luck!

And I *heart* Fluxx. I have my own copy already.
Incidentally, I spent a good chunk of this weekend playing board games with my brother. It was fun, and he started talking about how he really enjoyed board games and how it would be nice if his friends wanted to play them more often. I suggested he could have a board games party. He looked at me as if I were an idiot and said he thought that would be way, way too dorky. Brothers are weird.
