Chapter 4: So Close, So Far

Okura wasn’t sure why exactly he had to accompany Kazuya to give back a pullover, but he didn’t mind to do so; so he had agreed to go along.

As they together left the southern building to walk over to the northern one, he threw the smaller boy a look and frowned.

Usually, he would not have labelled Kazuya a chatterbox, but his silence was odd, too. It was a phrase he’d rather give Yokoyama or Murakami-kun; probably even Koyama, but Kazuya usually was cheerful and talking.

Now, he seemed rather nervous, fidgeting the fabric of the pullover in his hand.

Okura wanted to ask him, but he somehow felt, as if he better didn’t. So they kept on walking next to each other over to the northern dorms.

Kazuya hesitated in front of the door, but then he put on a stern face and opened it to walk into the stairway and walk up. Okura just followed him, wondering where exactly they’d go to.

He recognized the floor they walked over then, as the one he’d been at the evening before; the one the party had been held at. They were walking towards the end of the long corridor and Okura was about to finally speak up, when Kazuya suddenly stopped one door before the one of the room, they’d been in yesterday.

Kazuya gave the door that look again and Okura sighed.

“Kame, what is this about?”

The younger one gave him a look. “I’m giving the pullover back.”

“Whose is it?” Okura looked at the door.

Shaking his head, Kazuya stepped closer to the door and ignored Okura’s question.

They stood like that for a moment, silence between them.

“You know, Kame, you have to knock to make them notice you’re here”, Okura said, slightly annoyed and raised his hand, knocking the door with his fist.

Kazuya stared at him with huge, shocked eyes. He probably hadn’t been ready for that yet.

A dark brunette opened the door and looked at them, tilting his head. “What’s up, Kamenashi, Okura?”

Kazuya looked at him and let go of the breath he had held unconsciously.

Since he still didn’t take any action, Okura decided to do it for him. “He wants to give back your pullover.”

Uchi frowned and shook his head. “I can’t remember I’ve borrowed you a pullover?”

Kazuya finally seemed to have found his voice again, and with a blush he said: “It’s not yours, Uchi-kun; I wanted to…”

“Whom are you talking to, Uchi?”

The voice came from inside the room and they all silenced, Uchi turned and in the next moment the door opened wider and Jin came into the frame.

His hair was wet and droplets were dripping from it to his shoulders, trailing down his bare chest. He only wore a white towel tied around his hips.

Okura just stared at him, Kazuya looked away and Uchi grinned.

“So, it’s Jin’s?”

Jin leaned against the door frame and smiled innocently--- as innocent as he could look, at least--- and slightly shook his hair out of his view. “You’re bringing my pullover back?”

“I said you’d get it back today, didn’t I?” Kazuya’s expression was stubborn, as he looked at Jin now, holding the fabric to him.

“Okay, wait, you can take yours back then”, Jin said, a he took the pullover and went back into the room. He came back with Kazuya’s shirt. “You forgot it yesterday night.”

Kazuya gasped at the tone and threw a short glance at Okura, who just gaped at them.

This totally gave off the wrong image.

Jin made it look like something had been going on. And the bare facts that he did, made Kazuya mad and feel disgusted.

“Thanks”, he pressed out between his teeth and took his shirt back, which was neatly folded, so that the stains couldn’t be seen.

Uchi laughed slightly, as he turned to go back into the room and Jin threw him a look, then he smiled at Kazuya again.

“You know, why don’t you send your gaping friend here back and stay for a bit?”

Kazuya looked at him, from his head down to his toes and up again, and managed a cold smile. “You know, why don’t you get dressed and find yourself someone else to play?”

Okura closed his mouth and lifted a brow, but before he could interfere, someone else did from behind them.

“Jin-kun, don’t you think it’s inappropriate to stand in the corridor only dressed in a towel?”

“I already thought the same”, Uchi shouted from inside their room and Jin glanced into its direction.

He clicked his tongue and leaned against the door frame again. “No one complained so far.”

Kazuya gave him an annoyed glance and then turned to look at the person, who was approaching them.

And his jaw dropped.

He was probably the most beautiful person he had ever seen.

The brunette hair framed in perfect waves a long and thin face with dark, round eyes and more than perfect rolling lips.

He looked far from perfect and his pretty eyes looked at Kazuya at the moment.

“I didn’t know, you were already back, Kimura”, Jin commented.

The older one stopped in front of them and gave Jin a slightly indignant look. His expression was too graceful to call it annoyed, Kazuya thought.

“You could at least pretend some respect and call me Senpai, Jin-kun.”

Jin smirked and with an elegant move, he brushed his wet hair back from his forehead. He frowned, as only Okura looked at him, who didn’t seem impressed at all.

“Are you guys some of the new ones”, Kimura asked then and smiled at Kazuya and Okura.

Okura answered politely: “Yes”, while Kazuya just managed a nod.

“If Jin is insulting you in any way, let me know.”

“Are you one of the student councils, as well?” Okura looked curiously at him.

Kimura nodded. “Me, Sakurai-kun and next week, someone of the younger classes is going to be selected as a representative for them.”

Kazuya watched him and he had to admit that he probably just behaved like a twelve-year-old girl at the moment, but he absolutely admired that older boy in front of him.

He was pretty, his moves were so calm and elegant and the smile he had given them just a few seconds ago had been the most beautiful one Kazuya had ever seen.

If he hadn’t believed in love at first sight, he surely did now.

While he kept on talking to Okura, Kazuya was satisfied with just watching him, as someone suddenly tapped his shoulder and he turned his head.

“So, how about my offer now?” Jin gave him a kinky grin, ignoring the other two.

Kazuya blinked a few times, and as if he had to process what Jin had said, he opened his mouth slowly. “What offer?”

“You forgot?”, the older one frowned.

“Whatever”, Kazuya said and then nodded, before he looked at Kimura again.

Jin gaped at him for a second, then Kimura laughed at him; not seeing how it obviously made Kazuya’s heart jump. “I think he is not interested in you, Jin-kun, so why don’t you finally get dressed?” He looked at Kazuya directly now and blinked an eye. “We’ll head back to your dorms then?”

Not hearing what Jin was rambling behind him, Kazuya nodded and followed Kimura together with Okura.

“So, what are your guys’ names?”

“Okura Tadayoshi”, the taller one said and smiled friendly. “We’re in M1 and have only been here for about a week now, right, Kazuya?”

He nodded and looked at the older one, whose eyes had come back to Kazuya again. “Kamenashi Kazuya.”

“That sounds cute. I bet everyone is calling you Kame then?”

“You can, if you want!”, Kazuya said without thinking about it once.

Kimura laughed. “I’ll say Kame-chan, since you are so cute.”

Okura laughed and patted Kazuya’s shoulder. “He usually isn’t like this, Senpai, I really don’t know what has gotten into him today.”

They stopped in front of the southern dorm and Kimura gave Okura a look. “He isn’t?”

Kazuya shook his head. “I am as usual.”

“Okura!”

Someone shouted from above them and they all looked up, seeing Ryo leaning out of their window, pointing at Okura.

“Move up here, we need to talk!”

Okura gave him a cold look. “You missed saying what in your order?”

“Hurry”, Ryo answered and disappeared.

Sighing, Okura bowed to the other two. “Sorry, I guess I should go up.”

Kazuya looked after him and as he turned back to Kimura, he noticed the older one staring at him.

“Well, in any case”, he said and smiled at the younger one. “With a face like that, I will definitely call you Kame-chan then.”

Kazuya was glad, Kimura walked away, so he couldn’t see his face blushing in a dark shade of pink.

Okura didn’t have to get his key out or even knock, as he stepped in front of the door to his and Ryo’s room, it was opened for him and a glaring Ryo stood across from him.

“You!”

Okura frowned slightly and tilted his head. “What’s the matter, Ryo-kun?”

“There’s something we need to talk about; urgently, as it seems.” Ryo took a step back to let Okura walk in.

“Oh, hi Taguchi-kun”, he said in a surprised, but delighted voice. “I didn’t expect you here.”

“You see”, Ryo cut in, without giving Taguchi the chance to speak up, “that’s the whole problem to it.”

With confused eyes, Okura looked from Taguchi to Ryo.

“Why? I asked Taguchi to come over, because of the oral presentation we have to prepare together for chemistry.”

Ryo grinded on his teeth. “And what did you tell him to do?”

Okura looked at Ryo, as if he expected him to give the answer to that.

“You can’t be serious!” The older one stepped closer. “You really can’t actually mean that.”

Looking to Taguchi, Okura’s expression got confused. “What is he actually talking about?”

“I will tell you”, Ryo growled and made Okura look at him again, “what he is talking about. You let strangers go into our room.”

Blinking, Okura tilted his head. “I wasn’t here to let him in, if you remember.”

“That’s why you told him he should just go into the room and wait.”

“And?”

“And!” Ryo threw up his arms and turned, furious over the younger boy’s obliviousness. “And, he asks.”

Taguchi and Okura exchanged a look.

“Why don’t we all laugh over this?” Taguchi gave Ryo a broad smile, which he only got answered with a cold look.

The raven-haired turned to Okura again. “Well, I don’t know where you grew up, in which jungle where there is no such thing as privacy, but here, in this country, we don’t let people walk into other people’s rooms, flats, houses. Personal spaces, if you know that term.”

“I didn’t think it was a problem if he’d wait here”, Okura just answered.

“I could leave again.” Taguchi got up from the chair.

“Oh, don’t.” Okura gestured with his hand for Taguchi to sit again. “Ryo-kun is going to calm down in a minute.”

“I won’t!” The older one stepped close to Okura and poked his pointing finger onto the taller boy’s chest. “Not before I get the feeling you’d at least understand this problem.”

“Don’t fluster”, Okura said and patted his room mate’s shoulder. “There is no problem at all.”

“There was a stranger in our room when I came in”, Ryo tried to explain once more. “A stranger, Twiggy; that is a problem!”

“It’s Taguchi; you do know him.”

“I know his face, but just because I know a people’s face, I don’t let them into my room when I am not there.”

“Well, then… I know him; and not just his face.” Okura smiled calmly and pushed Ryo gently back. “You’re too close.”

Ryo blinked at him for a second, then took a deep breath. “Heaven…”, he sighed. “You really make me mad.”

“You are always mad at everyone for no reason, so I am not too worried.”

“I could make some jokes to cheer you up”, Taguchi offered. “I know some really good ones. See, there was a cherry tree once with a sparrow living in its branches…”

Another cold look made Taguchi silence. Taking himself back, Ryo grinded on his teeth again. “Really mad”, he mumbled, before he left the room.

Okura followed him out with his eyes and then shrugged a shoulder. “Sorry, Taguchi. He’s really strange sometimes.”

“I already noticed; that’s why I don’t hang out with him that much.”

“So, did I make you wait long?” Okura sat down and pulled some things to write over.

“No, I haven’t been here for long.” Taguchi leaned in and put his own papers to the desk. “Where have you been?”

“I helped Kame to bring something back.”

“Ah”, Taguchi nodded. “Nino said earlier he was strange today; is he feeling better?”

Okura shrugged a shoulder. “I don’t think he felt bad, actually. But something’s wrong, though.”

“I heard he disappeared with Akanishi-kun yesterday night.”

“Yeah, I heard that, too.” Okura didn’t think it’d be good to gossip about Kazuya, after all, he considered Kazuya as a good friend. “Who knows. I don’t think they are like that. Kazuya has just been here for a week.”

“Well”, Taguchi mumbled and gave Okura a look. “Jin’s like that, though; and if it had just been three days. He wouldn’t care.”

Not answering that, Okura opened a folder and smiled. “However, let’s start then?”

Nodding, the blonde dropped the topic, as well.

They worked for more than an hour, then Okura put his head to the table and moaned. “Hungry.”

Taguchi laughed and looked at his watch. “It’s lunchtime, however, so let’s go grab some food.”

Together, they made their way to the cafeteria and most people were already there.

While Koki waved them over, Taguchi went to talk to the table first, but Okura immediately made his way to get something to eat.

As he came back, he sat down next to Yokoyama and with happily said “I am digging in”, before he started to eat.

“That guy is so easy to please”, Koyama noticed and smiled at him.

“The food here is much better than in my previous school”, Okura explained and pulled a joyful face at the taste of the mushroom rice. “So much better.”

Ryo just gave him a glare and uninterested, the younger one kept eating, ignoring Ryo.

Koyama leaned in to him. “Now you wish you’d still share a room with me, don’t you?”

Taking another bite, Ryo shrugged a shoulder. “He’s not as talkative as you; that’s most likely a plus for him.”

“So, what did you two fight about?”

Ryo shrugged a shoulder. “He keeps forgetting the rules I set for him.”

Jin turned his head to him, frowning. “You’re not serious, are you? You set rules?”

“Sakurai-kun thinks he could set rules, as well.”

Throwing Yokoyama an annoyed glance, Ryo put down his chopsticks. “Seriously, he can’t just always leave the door open and let people in whenever he likes. Especially not, when neither of us is there.”

Taguchi smiled at him from the other end of the table. “No worries, Nishikido-kun; I told you I didn’t touch anything.”

Jin looked slightly confused. “Taguchi was in your room, while you weren’t there? And Okura wasn’t, either?”

“Exactly.”

“Tacchon is probably just a really faithful person”, Yasuda interfered. “And Junno is not the one who would do anything to your room; I bet he just sat there and waited patiently.”

Junno nodded as confirmation.

“Tacchon?” Tegoshi looked up from his meal and grinned happily. “That sounds cute.”

Okura looked at him and tilted his head. “You think so?”

Tegoshi nodded. “We call Ohno-kun Oh-chan sometimes, so that would not have been the right nickname for you. But Tacchon sounds really cute and suits you.”

Ryo snorted. “He is anything but cute.”

“You keep calling him Twiggy anyways”, Yokoyama noticed. “I’ve never heard you saying his name.”

“Look at him; he is nothing but skin and bone.”

Everyone turned their heads to Okura, who had just finished a second bowl of Ramen. He looked confused, as everyone stared at him.

“What?”

“You love to eat, don’t you?” Yasuda smiled affectionately; like he’d smile at a little child.

Slowly, Okura nodded. “Is that bad?”

Tegoshi pushed his plate with noodles over to him. “Totally fine; here you can have mine. I can’t eat any more.”

“Tego-chan, you’ll get sick if you don’t eat properly.”

“I had enough.”

“Be aware, Tacchon”, Jin said in a kinky voice. “Next, Tegoshi is going to fall in love with you. You’re absolutely his type.”

Ryo laughed. “Ah, it started just exactly with the same topic with Masuda, didn’t it?”

Okura gave Tegoshi a questioning look. “What are they talking about?”

“Don’t listen to them; they’re being silly. I only have one type I like”, he said a bit louder then.

Ryo and Jin continued laughing, but stopped, as Masuda came to their table.

“Isn’t Kamenashi-kun here?”

Yasuda shook his head. “I haven’t seen him today.”

“Weren’t you with him earlier this morning”, Taguchi asked Okura.

“He said he’d go back to his room”, the brunette confirmed.

“He’s probably not in the mood to eat”, Jin commented. “He had a memorable encounter today.”

Masuda frowned. “What do you mean?”

“Well…”

“Kimura-senpai is kind of impressing, isn’t he?” Okura started to eat the noodles Tegoshi had given him.

Jin raised a brow at him, but Okura was too engulfed in his food to notice.

“Kimura is back? I thought he’d come next week.” Koyama looked confused. “I thought he’d be back by next week.”

“However”, Masuda said and looked at the others again. “No clue where I can find Kamenashi?”

“I could check if he’s probably waiting in my bed”, Jin said and just got a frown from Masuda as an answer.

“Yeah, whatever”, he said, and turned.

“Massu, don’t you want to eat?”

He looked back and shook his head. “I am going to eat out today.”

“Again?” Tegoshi stood up from his chair, wanted to go after him, but Koyama held him back.

Yokoyama waited, until the younger one was gone, then he looked at Tegoshi. “He’s most likely getting himself Gyoza somewhere.”

Ryo snorted and looked up. “Don’t be foolish. He can’t eat Gyoza everyday.”

Yasuda smiled. “I think he can.”

“And I think he’s not alone when he does.”

Everyone looked at Jin and he shrugged a shoulder. “It’s pretty obvious he has a girlfriend, isn’t it?”

Okura looked away from him to Tegoshi and saw the younger one biting lip, looking at the table.

“It would make sense”, Taguchi admitted.

Koyama laughed. “He’s not like you, Jin, I don’t….”

“With that face, he’s surely never going to be like me”, Jin pointed out and got up, taking his plate. “But he usually likes eating together with his friends, so he obviously found someone he rather spends his time with.”

Not able to deny that, the others kept quiet, and everyone threw uncomfortable looks to Tegoshi, who didn’t look up.

“We have training”, he said then and stood, as well, taking his plate. “Ryo-kun, Akanishi, you’d better be there in time today, or Nagase will let you run extra rounds again.”

With that he left and made his way out.

“It’s not like he’d ever had a chance, anyways.”

Yasuda looked at Yokoyama and nodded. “He just hasn’t figured it yet.”

“Poor thing, though”, Koyama said.

“You’re always feeling bad for everyone. It was hopeless, so just be happy for Masuda.” Ryo followed Jin and the other five remained at the table.

Yasuda sighed. “Well, yeah; he’s most likely right.” Then he smiled at Okura, who didn’t seem to follow their conversation at all, finishing up his noodles.

“How about dessert, Tacchon?”

It’s been nearly a year, Nakamaru thought.

He had come to this school about a year ago and since then, everything had been going well. Things had been good at his old school, as well, but after that turning point, after that day, he had realized what he had lost, Nakamaru could not have stayed there.

Nearly a year, it crossed his mind, that Ueda had disappeared from his life.

He had just been gone one day, out of a sudden.

They hadn’t actually been neighbours, but Ueda had lived just a street away. One morning, on his way to school, Nakamaru had seen him. Ueda had joined his class that day and from then on, they had been friends.

Each morning, Nakamaru would have picked him up to go to school together and they had always been together; in class, during the breaks, after school--- even when they had days off or for the weekends.

It had been Ueda who had kissed him first. Nakamaru had probably been in love with Ueda since long before that, but in that moment, on that warm summer day they had been to a festival together, he had realized that he had felt more than just friendship.

Nakamaru had fallen in love with the pretty brunette, the boy from next street, who smiled as sweetly as a child, but yet had lips, as he had found that day, that tasted sinful and dangerously luscious.

He remembered that day, as he looked over to Ueda.

They had maths and Nakamaru rather spend his time remembering their past than listening.

Ueda apparently wasn’t listening, either. His look gazed outside the window; he was probably dreaming.

Looking away, Nakamaru wondered what it was that went through that pretty head.

One morning, when he had come to pick Ueda up, no one had been there anymore. He had ringed the bell and no one had opened up.

He had never heard of Ueda again, had never gotten a mail, a letter, a call from him with an explanation.

Ueda had disappeared out of Nakamaru’s life without a word back then.

Nakamaru had left the place that had remembered him of the one he loved, but couldn’t be with. It had taken so long to become happy again, to forget that Ueda had betrayed him like that.

And just now, that he had found his happiness again, the pretty brunette had made his way back into his life.

Into this world Nakamaru had been happy in without him.

The bell rang and everyone got up, getting their things together to leave.

Nakamaru looked at Ueda once more and noticed his eyes on him, turning away quickly. He left the room to go down to the biology rooms and caught up on Subaru.

“Are you going to see Yasuda-kun?”

Subaru nodded. “Yeah, he’s having off now and I quickly go see him for my break.”

“Okay, I’ll hold a seat for you next to me.”

“Great”, Subaru smiled and left into the other direction.

Nakamaru just wanted to go down the steps, when he noticed someone gripping his arm and turned his head.

“Yuichi”, Ueda said quietly, kind of emotionless even. “Can we talk?”

Nakamaru looked at him, into those eyes, but he couldn’t find anything. “What about?”

“I guess we need to, don’t we?”

Shrugging a shoulder, the older one turned completely. “Isn’t it a bit late now?”

Ueda nodded simply and looked down, not saying a word.

“You know, I don’t really get why you had to come here. Did you know I was attending this school when you signed in?”

Again, he just got a nod as an answer.

“Then why did you come here?” Nakamaru couldn’t hold back that question.

“Because I finally found out where you were.”

Nakamaru laughed. “What? Wait, I wasn’t the one anyone had to search for.”

Ueda looked up. “You weren’t there anymore, when I came back. I didn’t know where you were.”

So, after all Ueda had come back to see him once more. Nakamaru had always wondered about it. “Did you think I would wait for you, after what you’ve done?”

He shook his head.

“You’re as tight-lipped as you’ve always been”, the older one sighed and took a step back. “You know, you could just have said that you didn’t want me anymore or whatever your reason was.”

Not looking up, Ueda pressed his lips together.

“But leaving me like you did, I don’t think I can ever forgive you that. It was seriously the worst.”

“I didn’t mean to…”

“No, thanks”, Nakamaru interrupted. “I don’t want any apologies.”

Ueda stayed where he was, as Nakamaru just turned and left him behind. He looked up and followed the other one with his gaze, waited until he couldn’t see him anymore.

Then he sighed and went after him, followed him, as he did everyday.

It wasn’t fair, Nakamaru didn’t see how Ueda looked at every move he made, waited every morning for him to appear.

It wasn’t fair, Nakamaru didn’t look at him anymore, didn’t see that he regretted what happened; that Ueda had just come there for him.

But probably he didn’t deserve fairness.
