I'm not supporting Ron Paul... I haven't made my mind up yet, but I'll vote democrat as well. I'm pretty far to the left when it comes to politics and I too would never, ever ever... not in one million years vote for a candidate who was anti abortion.
Very valid question. Ron Paul is anti-Central Government, and a staunch constitutional revivalist. Following with that, he would only overturn Roe vs. Wade so that it would then go back to a state mandated issue. This supports his consistent voting record. With so many huge issues at risk, he will take the decision back to the state level, as the constitution originally laid out. This way voters don't have to sacrifice an entire branch position over his personal feelings about one issue.
There are many reasons that he is the first politician I have ever wanted to vote for, and most of it hinges on the way he responds to issues like these. The honesty of his voting record in the house is a strong showing of his character as a person and a politician, and unmatched among candidates from either party.
This country is building towards economic crises, and the only way to avert that is to get to back to the constitution and let the market work. Run Ronnie Run!!!
take a few minutes to go through the issues and see for yourself. also listen to the little video clip at the top because he says it better than i can.
You're failing to realize that a lot of state governments (especially ours) are not AT ALL qualified to determine what civil liberties citizens of the state can and cannot have. Unless, of course, you're determined to see things like affirmative action, gay rights, abortion rights, etc take enormous steps backwards. Quite frankly, I trust these things to be protected more at a federal level than a state level

Some states would pass it some would not, at least then it would come down to a vote instead of a Supreme Court mandate

Ron Paul's an interesting guy with a lot of potential, but after seeing him on Bill Maher's show saying that we shouldn't have fought the Civil War, I can't in good conscience really take him seriously. I understand the political theory and beliefs behind the statement, but damn, it's pretty tough to get on board with that one. About two minutes into http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xo6KIusCBoU.
What makes Ron Paul so appealing and interesting to a lot of people is that he's different -- essentially an independent with a Republican label, so Republicans feel comfortable voting for him. I can get behind the idea of taking the road less travelled, but not at the expense of human rights. And I, too, can't see myself voting for a Republican.
